What does the word ‘creativity’ mean to you?

Creative Conversations with Nina Lenton

So what does the word ‘creativity’ mean to you?

I started exploring this at the end of 2024 by talking to some people. I recorded the conversations on video and audio, and shared those conversations to see what thoughts they prompted in others. This experiment led to a podcast – the original 3 conversations have been published as audios on Substack and Spotify, and I have since recorded a second series of 9 episodes which launched in September 2025.

If you’d like to hear more about the podcast and find out when I record a new series, please sign up to my newsletter here.

What do I mean by the word ‘creativity’?

I think creativity falls into two types:
💡 Creative expression
💡 Creative thinking

Which means there is a lot that falls under my definition of creativity!

Creative expression could range from crafts to painting, from music to voice recordings, as well as things like cooking and gardening that require creativity in a less traditional sense. Some of these might simply be hobbies and some might form all or part of your business.

Creative thinking could be what we might typically think of as the way creativity shows up in business – generating ideas – but it could also include things like shaping ideas and ensuring that people feel empowered to participate in a creative process.

And if so much falls under this definition, that means that we’re all creative in some way….

Here are some of my previous thoughts on the meaning of the word ‘creativity’ in a video I made on this topic.
