I ask my guests “what does the word creativity mean to you?”
We talk about creative expression and creative thinking, and how those show up in business.
In this episode I talk to Matt Drzymala, who is a fun brand copywriter.
He shares how he discovered his passion for creative writing and copywriting. He talks about how the Beano inspired him, how his business branding came about, and where the idea of him focusing on fun copywriting came from. We also discuss where his ideas come from.

Further thoughts and reflections on this episode
I wanted to find out what my podcast guests learned from our conversations – so I asked them. Below are Matt’s thoughts.
What did you learn by appearing on the Creative Conversations podcast?
I think I learnt after listening back and listening to other episodes, that no matter what creativity means to me, it’s not wrong. I shouldn’t second-guess myself or think that what creativity is to me is wrong or ‘lesser-than’ than anyone else’s definition. It’s what make me different and what makes me stand out. Nobody is like me and that’s good because nobody else can bring to client work what I can.
And building LEGO or reading the Beano isn’t just for kids — it’s for kidults too!
Do you have any wisdom or thoughts you’d like to add to the topics we discussed in our conversation?
I’d worked in payroll for 12 years before I trained as a copywriter. I just dismissed that I’d written my whole life in a really original, creative way. And at 36, I was worried I was stuck, but I wasn’t. I knew the right path for me and that was to be a writer. Never think you’re too old. Whether you’re 36 or 56, if you want to do something, do what it takes to do it (whether that’s a course or volunteering) and then go for it.
My reflections
I really enjoyed hearing about Matt’s journey into copywriting – and I was already aware of the Beano story, so wanted to make sure this got a mention as well. I was fascinated by the conversation about the creative process – Matt didn’t think he had one, and yet when we talked about it a bit more, it was obvious that his process was similar to other creatives, for example graphic designers and website designers. Space to let ideas percolate is so important for creative work – and that came up several times in these conversations, as well as knowing it from my own experience.
What do you think?
Did you have any insights into your own creativity while listening to this? Matt and I would love to hear what you learned and whether it’s inspired you to do anything yourself. You can contact me here to let me know.
